Mapping of few-electron wave-functions in semiconductor nanocrystals - evidence of exchange interaction

چکیده
The influence of the tip-substrate bias induced electric field in a scanningtunneling-spectroscopy experiment on charged InAs nanocrystals is studied. Calculating the ground and first excited many-particle state for five electrons occupying the quantum dot reveals a Stark-induced reordering of states by increasing the electric field strength. It is shown that this reordering of states is accompanied by a symmetry change of the local density of states (LDOS), which in principal is observable in a wave-function mapping experiment. Since in the usually performed experiments the electric field can not be directly controlled, we investigate the crystal size dependence of the 5-electron LDOS symmetry. It is found that the symmetry changes from spherical to torus-like by increasing the nanocrystal radius.

Short-range versus long-range electron-hole exchange interactions in semiconductor quantum dots
Using a many-body approach based on atomistic pseudopotential wave functions we show that the electronhole exchange interaction in semiconductor quantum dots is characterized by a large, previously neglected long-range component, originating from monopolar interactions of the transition density between different unit cells. The calculated electron-hole exchange splitting of CdSe and InP nanocry...

We present a pseudopotential approach to the calculation of the excitonic spectrum of semiconductor quantum dots. Starting from a many-body expansion of the exciton wave functions in terms of singlesubstitution Slater determinants constructed from pseudopotential single-particle wave functions, our method permits an accurate and detailed treatment of the intraconfiguration electron-hole Coulomb...

Colloidal core-shell semiconductor nanocrystals form an important class of optoelectronic materials, in which the exciton wave functions can be tailored by the atomic configuration of the core, the interfacial layers, and the shell. Here, we provide a trustful 3D characterization at the atomic scale of a free-standing PbSe(core)-CdSe(shell) nanocrystal by combining electron microscopy and discr...
متن کاملNano-engineered electron–hole exchange interaction controls exciton dynamics in core–shell semiconductor nanocrystals
A strong electron-hole exchange interaction (EI) in semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs) gives rise to a large (up to tens of meV) splitting between optically active ('bright') and optically passive ('dark') excitons. This dark-bright splitting has a significant effect on the optical properties of band-edge excitons and leads to a pronounced temperature and magnetic field dependence of radiative de...
متن کاملElectron-hole correlations in semiconductor quantum dots with tight-binding wave functions
The electron-hole states of semiconductor quantum dots are investigated within the framework of empirical tight-binding descriptions for Si, as an example of an indirect-gap material, and InAs and CdSe as examples of typical III-V and II-VI direct-gap materials. We significantly improve the energies of the single-particle states by optimizing tight-binding parameters to give the best effective ...
